Georgiana Hill
Georgiana joined Ulley Sailing Club at the age of 12 as a complete novice. She was soon sought after as a lightweight crew and, under the tutelage of club members, went on to helm her own Splash, which she enthusiastically campaigned on the Youth Travellers series and, encouraged by Roy Goodison, at national and international events. Aged 17, she won the Splash National Championships and was named Yorkshire and Humberside Young Sailor of the Year 2000. She carried the flag for Great Britain and was placed second UK competitor in the Splash World Championships in Carnac, France, the following year. At the same time, she campaigned RYA Youth Class boats, sailing a 420 and a Laser Radial in their national championships, before moving on to University.
She was selected for the Newcastle University Sailing Team in her first year there and was Ladies Captain from 2002-4, gaining a BUSA bronze medal in Yacht Racing and her University’s Team Royals for this and other good performances. She also organised BUSA events as chair of their northern regional Committee. Moving on to Southampton for her Masters year, Georgie was again selected for the University team, winning another BUSA bronze, this time in team racing. After University Georgie joined the increasingly popular RS 200 class in which she enjoyed considerable success, both as helm and crew. Along with friends, she is currently campaigning a Melges 24 sportsboat, where she acts as tactician. They were first placed British amateur crew in the 2009 European championships.
Now working as senior paediatric audiological scientist at the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, Georgie still manages to fit sailing and other sports, including long distance running, skiing, cycling and rock climbing, into her busy schedule.
