Ulley Sailing Club has been without access to its club-house and water since the South Yorkshire floods of June 2007 but still maintains a proud tradition and strong identity under its own burgee. Our aim is to continue to offer our full social and sailing programme using other venues and try to get back to our clubhouse and sailing on our own water as quickly as possible. We are most grateful to all those who have helped us through this difficult period and welcome any further support and enquiries.
On May 8th, 2007, we celebrated 35 years since the official opening of the club with a very successful Open Day, when over 90 visitors tried sailing, and a ‘birthday cake by the lake’ was cut to raise money for the Sail 4 Cancer charity. We were proud of our achievements both on and off the water – a very active youth section, following in the wake of earlier success stories, notably that of Paul Goodison; a full membership which had worked hard all year to improve our facilities with a brand new jetty for safety boat operations, a re-decked pontoon and improved site security. We had introduced a year round sailing programme and plans were in hand to negotiate a long lease with our landlords, Rotherham Borough Council, to reconstruct the boundary fence and hopefully enlarge the boat park. In the longer run we were looking to work with the Friends of Ulley Country Park and RMBC to find funding for a new clubhouse. Our achievements were recognised at the end of the year when, in the new Rotherham Sports Awards, we were voted runner up best sporting club of 2007
On June 25th 2007 we woke to the headline news, which went round the world, that our lovely reservoir was threatening to burst its dam (though many reports called it OO –LAY, it is of course pronounced in good Yorkshire fashion and without an ‘h’ as ULL – EE). Following the emergency action, our club house and boat park became a construction site and has been a virtual no-go area to our members ever since
Despite the set back we were determined to keep the Ulley flag flying and were fortunate to find the space to relocate our boats (including the club dinghies and safety boat) at More Hall reservoir, near Stocksbridge, where we have been sailing alongside South Yorkshire Sailing Club ever since. Our hardier members have also been sailing Sheffield Viking’s winter series at Dam Flask, so thanks to help from sailing clubs around the region, we have been able to maintain a full racing programme, make provision for casual sailing and meet any training demands. We expect that similar arrangements will continue until we can return to our much loved home at Ulley
We are thankful that in October 2007 Rotherham Borough Councillors voted unanimously to repair the reservoir, and restore sailing there, but work is expected to continue up to 2010. Meanwhile we hope provisional arrangements can be made to allow our members back to our club-house and water. Further information will be provided on the News page of this website and through Ulley Update, our regular publication to members.
